The arrival sequence

A smooth arrival makes guests feel expected and cared for:

1. Anticipate — know who is arriving, when, and any preferences or requirements in advance.
2. Greet promptly and warmly, by name and correct title where known.
3. Assist with coats, luggage, and transport.
4. Offer refreshment appropriate to the time and the guest.
5. Orient them — show them to their room or the relevant area, and convey any arrangements the principal has made.

Preparing the guest room

Guest protocol ensures every guest is received and hosted to a consistent standard, appropriate to their status and the household’s customs — including correct forms of address. Take cues from the principal, and when unsure of a title or pronunciation, find out discreetly in advance rather than risk getting it wrong.
