How to Clean Marble & Natural Stone (Without Damaging It)
The safe way to clean marble, granite and natural stone in a luxury home — what to use, what to never use, and how to deal with etching and stains.

Marble and natural stone are everywhere in luxury homes — countertops, floors, bathrooms, table tops, sculpture bases — and they are surprisingly easy to ruin with ordinary cleaning products. A single wipe with the wrong cleaner can leave permanent damage. This is the safe, professional approach.
The one rule: pH-neutral only
Marble is calcium carbonate, which reacts with acid. That makes the most common household cleaners — and many “natural” ones — actively dangerous to it:
- Never use vinegar, lemon, citrus cleaners, bleach, or abrasive scouring products.
- Do use warm water with a few drops of a pH-neutral stone soap, applied with a soft cloth.
- Always dry the surface afterward with a clean cloth to prevent water spots.
The same caution applies to acidic foods and drinks — wine, coffee, fruit juice, tomato — which etch if left to sit.
Daily care
- Dust and wipe with a soft, damp cloth and pH-neutral cleaner.
- Blot spills immediately — blot, don’t wipe, so you don’t spread the liquid or grind it in.
- Dry to a streak-free finish.
- Use coasters, trivets, and mats under anything acidic, hot, or heavy.
Stains vs etching — they’re different problems
This distinction matters:
- A stain is something absorbed into the stone (oil, wine, coffee). It can often be lifted with a poultice — a paste that draws the substance back out over several hours.
- Etching is physical damage to the polished surface from acid. It looks like a dull water mark but is actually corrosion, and must be re-polished or honed — a specialist job.
Knowing which you’re dealing with prevents wasted effort and, more importantly, tells you when to call a stone professional rather than risk making it worse — the same judgment a butler applies to fine art and silver.
Sealing and protection
Natural stone should be sealed periodically to slow absorption — how often depends on the stone type and how heavily it’s used (a simple water-drop test shows when resealing is due). Sealing buys time against staining but does not make stone acid-proof, so the no-acid rule always stands.
