The Butler's Valet Guide: Packing, Pressing & Wardrobe Care

Caring for a principal’s wardrobe is one of the most personal duties in private service — and one where competence is instantly visible. A creased suit on arrival, a badly ironed collar, a suitcase that arrives in chaos: these are the small failures that undermine trust. This is the valet craft a butler is expected to master.

Ironing a shirt (the professional order)

Iron slightly damp, on the correct heat for the fabric, and work in a set order so you never re-crease finished sections:

1. Collar — flat, inside first, working from the points inward.
2. Cuffs — unbuttoned, inside first, then outside.
3. Sleeves — seam aligned, press one flat face then the other (or use a sleeve board to avoid a crease line if none is wanted).
4. Yoke — drape the shoulder over the narrow end of the board, press across the back.
5. Body — start at the button placket, work around the front, side, back, and second front.
6. Hang immediately on a quality hanger to set and cool.

Steam and a little patience beat heat and speed every time.

Packing a suitcase so nothing creases

The professional approach is the bundle / interleaving method:

• Heavy items (shoes in bags, washbag) at the base, near the wheels, so they don’t crush tailoring in transit.
• Interleave garments, wrapping them around a soft core so each piece folds gently rather than at a sharp crease.
• Tissue paper in the folds of jackets and trousers to cushion the crease.
• Roll casual knits and t-shirts to save space and avoid fold lines.
• Fill shoes with socks, and bag them to protect clothing.
• Tailoring in a garment bag wherever possible — fold only when you must.

Unpack promptly on arrival and hang everything; a few minutes of steam settles any travel creases.

Folding a suit jacket for travel

When a garment bag isn’t possible: turn one shoulder inside out and nest the other shoulder inside it, so the jacket folds along its own seams without distorting the structure. Fold once horizontally with tissue in the crease. This is the fold that survives a suitcase intact.

The wider valet role

Beyond pressing and packing, the valet (or butler acting as valet) maintains the whole wardrobe: laundering and dry-cleaning schedules, shoe care and polishing, attending to accessories, rotating seasonal clothing, and laying out outfits appropriate to each occasion — knowing the difference between business, black-tie, and country dress, and what the day’s schedule demands. Discretion extends here too: a principal’s wardrobe and habits are private.
